Dell now sells laptop with open source operating systems preinstalled. While that might seem like a good idea, it actually makes no difference. Prices seem to stay the same even after the alternative was put in to place.

Open source software is free. Meaning, dell is shipping laptops out with free software, which in the normal realm of our universe, this would mean that the price on said laptops would drop. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The price stays the same, Dell pockets more money. Its a win-win situation, for Dell. So next time you purchase a laptop/desktop computer, make sure you get some sort of discount for choosing open source. Call them up, ask them to explain themselves. Doesn’t hurt to try, and might even save you some cash.
