I recently got an iPhone and was very unhappy to discover I couldn’t use one of my own mp3s as a ringtone. I thought this was very strange until I discovered Apple wants you to pay again for the right to make a ringtone. So you pay $.99 for the song on itunes, then they want you to pay another $.99 to make it a ring tone. Ok that doesn’t sound right to me. I have already paid for the song once, why should I have to pay for it again? Well I remembered that if you ripped an audio book, you had to rename the file to get it to be in the audio book category. That got me thinking maybe you could do the same thing with a ringtone. So I did a search and found they had an extension of m4r. I tried renaming an mp3 to that but it did not work. Then i converted an mp3 to aac and renamed it, still did not work. Then I discovered that ringtones are normally around 30 sec long. So I converted 30 sec of an mp3 to aac (made it an m4p for some reason) and then renamed it to m4r. That worked, so now you can make any song you have into a ring tone.
Here is what I did to make my ringtone.
1. In Itunes right click on an mp3 and click “Get info”.
![]()
3. Put the start and end times for your ring tone.
![]()
4. Click ok
5. Now right click on the mp3 and select convert to aac.
![]()
6. Right click on the file and click “Show in folder” or “Show in Windows Explorer”.
![]()
7. You should now have a 30 sec file with an extension of m4p or m4a. (Mine is only 2 sec because I converted a short file as an example)
![]()
8. Change the extension to m4r.
![]()
9 Itunes will not be able to find the file because it is named different so delete the one that is in your library
10 Now you will have to add the renamed file back into your library.
11. You will now have the file in a section of itunes called “Ringtones”.
12. Drag the ringtone onto your iPhone.
Congratulations you have just made yourself a ringtone.
A few things to watch out for. I converted “It’s all about the Pentiums” by Weird Al and it would not work well with other ring tones. To solve this problem, just remove the apostrophe in the name of the file and in the id tag of the song.

4Ok so it appears that you are to the part where you need to get the m4r onto your iPhone. Easiest way is to open itunes, go to file->add file. Navigate to the m4r file, select add. Now it should be in your itunes library. While your iphone is connected to your computer and listed in itunes. Drag it onto iphone and it should add it for you. to change the ring tone you do it on your iphone. On your iphone go to setting->sounds->Ringtone. It should be at the top of the list under Custom.

7Are you on a pc because I don’t have add file and if I go to import or add to library it gives me an option to open not add. So I tried to open and nothing happened. Also who ever is saying that there is no properties option that is also correct. You need to go to get info and you then you will have tabs on the top of the dialog box go to options. and then everything else is the same.

13A few tips:
1) If you don’t get the “Convert to AAC” option when you right click on your mp3, you need to go into your preferences and change your CD importing option to AAC. If it was set to MP3 (or something else), that is the only convert option you’ll get when you right click. After changing it to AAC you’ll get the “convert to AAC” option when you right click. You can always change your CD importing option back when you are done making ringtones.
2) Once you create your ringtone and change the suffix to .m4r, delete it (you don’t need to delete the original mp3) from iTunes and re-add it via “Add file to library”. Once you do that, it should show up under the ringtones section and will get synced to your iPhone on the next sync.
3) When you are all done, don’t forget to go back to your original source file and uncheck the options to make it 30 seconds in length. If you don’t, you might be wondering why your song only plays for 30 seconds on your iPod.

You must be trying to use a song that you bought of itunes. I’m not sure it it will work with one of them. I am using an mp3 that I ripped off a cd.

how do i change the extension to .m4r?
Right click on the file and click rename. Make sure you can see your file extensions in your folder settings.

26you have to look at the file through windows explorer. If you don’t see the file extension then go to tools->folder options. Click on teh view tab. Scroll down until you see “Hide extensions for known file types”. Make sure it is unchecked. Now you should be able to see the file extension.
