Geeks and nerds. The ultimate struggle. To non techie users, there is no difference. To the rest of us, the difference is like night and day. What exactly is a geek? What is a nerd? The wiki has it as this:
For nerds,
Nerd, as a stereotypical or archetypal designation, refers to somebody who passionately pursues intellectual or esoteric knowledge or pastimes, rather than engaging in a social life, participating in organized sports, or other mainstream activities. The Merriam-Webster definition is an “unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially: one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits.”
For geeks,
A geek is an individual who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd. The Merriam-Webster definitions for the word geek are “1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity,” though these are only three of many definitions.
The wiki has it. Well almost. Im not sure about the carnie biting the head off a chicken part. Nerds are losers. They are social rejects who have no life, know only one thing, and ridicule non-losers for not being losers. They despise anyone who doesnt know what they know, and they even hate each other. Its their nature.
A geek on the other hand, loves and appreciates other people. He embraces the social life and has a few non-geeky friends. Geeks know almost everything there is to know about a certain are of expertise, usually having to do with technology. So people, dont call me a nerd when I show my expertise on computers. Im a geek.

1Around here, both are derogatory, but geek is far worse. They have many similarities. Socially ineptitude being the most defining quality in both. Both have a tendency to be interested in electronics, technology, fantasy and sci-fi, sometimes to an obsessive level. The main difference being that nerds are smart, while geeks just think they are.

2Wow. Harsh.
I didn’t think being a nerd meant I didn’t like people. I’m pretty personable, really.
I do, however, find that deep down I am a snob. I just don’t act on it.
It’s like anything else: call a person what they want to be called. I’ll call you a geek, but I label myself nerdy.
