Video game crossovers make the world a better place. Take two obscure titles that have a dedicated audience and mix them together like some kind of digital smoothie. Two separate groups of fanboys form like Voltron and become one. It’s a beautiful thing.

Prominent examples of this can be found in a few real games. Most notably, “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (2008 TBA release) looks to bury one of the oldest game related hatchets. Plus, it blends that traditional Olympic games video game with fun and familiar characters. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam fuses the popular Gundam and Dynasty/Samurai Warrior franchises into a game of giant robots fighting historically accurate battles. Japan held on to this one for a while, but it’s coming to America like Eddie Murphy on August 28th. “Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles also gets a nod for what looks like a seriously fun mix of the “Resident Evil series storyline and “House of the Dead game play.

But this article isn’t about real gaming crossovers- it’s about ones I wish existed. These are the daydream titles I won’t hold my breath for but would gladly sacrifice a limb to play. This list isn’t just made up of direct character crossovers, but more of a wish list of games that should merge styles/elements. Enjoy the 6 Video Game Crossovers I Wish Existed

6) EA Sports meets Super Smash Bros.

I love a good sports game just as much as the next guy. Basketball, football, baseball, soccer- you name it and I’ll play it…in a video game. Sometimes, beating my closest friends with no mercy in a fair game with rules isn’t enough for me. Sometimes, I want to beat them within an inch of their digital lives. Wouldn’t it be great if you could pick from the best and biggest of all the sports stars across every one of EA Sports’ releases? I’m picturing 4 people running around the venues of various sports, seating included, beating each other up with signature moves and objects around screen. Picture Chris Kaman pile driving Tiger Woods when he suddenly gets a folding chair to the back from Barry Bonds. Licensing headaches will keep this from ever becoming a reality.

5) Mortal Kombat meets Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Cop

The Die Hard Arcade Game (and it’s Dreamcast sequel Dynamite Cop) centered around the idea of walking into room after room and beating the holy hell out of everybody around you with any item you could see. Imagine doing that with your favorite Mortal Kombat characters! There could be two separate story lines where you fight once with a good team (tons of characters to choose from and 4 could co-op at once) through rooms of foot soldiers and big bad evil bosses…only to do the exact same thing with a team villains when you’re done. I’m a big fan of old school beat ‘em ups, and a huge fan of the entire family of Mortal Kombat Kharacters, so this would be about as awesome as peanut butter cups for breakfast.

4) Paperboy meets Lair…on the Wii!
paperlair

I’m picturing myself flying around on a giant dragon through a post apocalyptic suburbia, flicking my wrist with serious precision to deliver newspapers. As far as I can tell, the biggest problem with this idea is writing a believable storyline that explains why the mail needs to be delivered by dragons. After the apocalypse. Regardless, this is the kind of thing that will breathe life back into the Paperboy franchise.

3) Street Fighter 2 meets Super Mario RPG

Pick a fighter from a familiar list (the exact Street Fighter 2 roster would be ideal) and embark on a quest that provides the player with deep character development, increasingly difficult puzzles and turn based battles. They would have to use Super Mario RPG’s signature feature of precision timing to perform an extra powerful attack. I think this style of game play could look intentionally old school while being extremely fun and immersive. I’d love to see Ryu go on an origins journey that explains how he learned some of his fighting skills and maybe even lets us know why the hell he’s fighting. Do these people just cut each other off in traffic constantly then pull over to settle it? Do they e-thug on message boards and then decide to meet up IRL? These questions need to be answered.

2) Grand Theft Auto meets Streets of Rage 2

As previously stated, I’m a huge old school beat ‘em up fan. Streets of Rage 2, in my humble opinion, is the best game ever. I’m also a huge GTA fan and would love to see the two cross paths. I know that you can beat just about anybody up as you wander all over the huge sandbox layout of GTA, but what if that was the whole objective? What if the entire point of GTA was to walk around (as Axle, Skate, Max and/or Blaze) and just punch in every single person’s face. You would turn a corner in a dark alley, walk into a bar and then find a boss! You could stop off at a hardware store and pick up a lead pipe. You could waste the rest of your life playing this game if it actually existed. I know I could.

1) Raiden meets Starfox 64

Imagine flying straight on towards enemies in a 3-D overhaul of one of the best airborne shooters ever. I’m using Starfox 64 as the game to base it off of because that’s still some of the most fun I’ve ever had piloting a digital vehicle. I see powerups galore and crazy zoom-outs when you drop a bomb on the screen. There would be a massive selection of aircrafts, each with its own unique weapons systems and advantages/disadvantages in the way they fly. There’s no doubt in my mind that this could be game of the year if done right. Better yet, it could be the arcade exclusive that revives the quarter pushing gaming industry here in America. Of course, I wouldn’t even pick the thing up if I wasn’t encouraged at least once to do a barrel roll.
